What Is Blood Flow Restriction (BFR)?

Seattle Rehab Specialists’ Blood Flow Restriction therapy utilizes an FDA-approved blood pressure cuff as a tourniquet to safely restrict blood flow to muscles during low-intensity exercises. Blood restriction triggers the body’s metabolic stress and cellular swelling, producing similar effects that occur during high-intensity workouts.

BFR promotes muscle growth and increased strength without loading the muscles with heavy weights. It is an ideal treatment for those recovering from injury and surgery. Patients with disabilities, or those who experience pain in routine exercise, can greatly benefit from BFR to increase strength and safely learn proper form under low-load resistance.

Conditions Treated with BFR Therapy

Pre/Post-Operative Rehabilitation

After surgery, muscles can weaken and become unsupportive due to the rest required to recover. BFR accelerates recovery and keeps the muscles intact while you wait to resume regular activity.

Injury Recovery

While you recover from an injury, you want to keep your muscles strong while holding back from high-intensity exercises. Fractures, ligament tears, and muscle strains all require rest. However, BFR allows you to maintain muscle mass during the recovery period.

Exercise Performance

If you experience pain during high-intensity workouts, BFR can build your muscles while performing low-load exercises. Then, your muscles will be ready to support your workouts once the pain subsides.

Bone or Muscle Weakness

After a prolonged rest period due to an injury or surgery recovery, you can build your muscles back up without shocking the system with heavy weights. BFR promotes a gradual increase in muscle strength and stamina.

When you pair BFR therapy with physical therapy, you can enjoy improved muscle strength and growth, reduced joint and bone stress, and optimized recovery. It’s ideal to be able to preserve muscle mass while minimizing pain. Additionally, BFR is a low-impact cardiovascular workout that will promote heart health while you wait to resume regular movement.

Disabled Populations

Exercise of any nature can feel inaccessible to those navigating body differences or musculoskeletal variations. Aligned with our goals of providing accessible care, our PTs are trained in utilizing tools like BFR to treat bodies of all kinds.

If you are limited in the gym or at home, BFR can close the gap to get you to your strength goals.

Chronic Pain

Chronic pain can severely limit daily activities; affecting physical mobility, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life. Many are unaware of the benefits of strength training in managing pain levels, as weight-bearing exercise cannot be tolerated.

BFR circumvents this by creating an artificial strain on the muscle, making it work harder without increasing pain or risking injury.

What to Expect During a BFR Session

Once we confirm you are a good candidate for BFR, we will determine your personalized pressure for the upper and lower extremities.

Each session takes anywhere from 8 to 25 minutes, depending on your exercise plan.

Our Techniques and Equipment

We prioritize precision and safety by using SmartCuffsTM for our BFR equipment. We are able to enter personalized pressure levels for optimal results. In addition, the BFR cuffs are built with patient comfort in mind.

Measuring Progress and Outcomes

We use electromyographic (EMG) feedback to determine progress. We also use manual data from muscle function testing and muscle growth measurements. We adjust treatment according to collected data to maximize results.

Home Exercise / Rental Program

For patients that would benefit from daily BFR therapy, we offer a BFR specific home exercise program and Smartcuff ™ equipment that you can rent and bring home.

The Right Candidate for BFR Therapy

We are diligent in determining if BFR therapy is a suitable treatment for you. We consider the following before proceeding with your BFR treatment plan:

  • Medical History
  • Current Health Status
  • Physical Assessment
  • Psychological Readiness
  • Fitness and Mobility Levels
  • Contraindications
